foi aproveitar enquanto durou

"Beginning in April, visitors to NYTimes.com will have access to 10 free articles per month instead of 20."

este ano também não há Trieste:
"There were no more than a half dozen people wandering around the Miramare Castle, a small, lovely residence overlooking the city that was conceived in the mid-19th century by the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph. A story: He’d hoped to retire there with his beloved wife, Carlotta; instead, he was pressed into an appointment as emperor of Mexico, a bizarre and preposterous episode that ended when he was captured and executed by Benito Juárez. He never had a chance to live in the castle; instead, the hapless Carlotta, insane with grief, occupied the place alone and in seclusion.

I would say you can’t make this stuff up; but you can, and if you can, Trieste is a place to do it. There are many cities in the world that are made for painters and painting; there are cities for filmmakers, for music, for ballet. But there are no particular cities for writers and poets; the occupation is too solitary, its audience too amorphous. Or perhaps there is one, this one, Trieste — a city made for talking, thinking, writing, wandering. A city for storytellers and makers of verse. I loved it immediately. I’m going back as soon as I can."

"The passenger steps out onto the overcast deck and remembers a line. Soft was the sun. The wind to his back, he is facing the stern and an endless trail of thoughts drifting away from him towards the horizon. He wants no words, only to enjoy the delicate anticipation of a moment waiting to reveal itself. What are the limits of language? This is the mind, felt, not spoken. He makes a photograph of a seagull, and does not resist the emotion that brings.

There is a town passing by on the starboard side of the ship, the mind-boggling, awe-inspiring, crazy-making, world of people. He is happy for the distance, but knows that the idea of separation is an illusion. Everything exists according to the laws of nature. There is a core, it seems. The sea turns grey for a moment, the lights from the town slowly dimming, overtaken by fog. He makes another photograph of the fading light, the soft presence of time. The ship begins to slow, ahead a port, another journey."

"a weaker beer for the nuns"

“Here already (the water of the river) is near the building. It fills the boiler. And it gives up itself to the fire which cooks, to prepare the drink of the monks” (anonymous, thirteenth century, describing the abbey of Clairvaux)

In the Middle Ages, the Church, with a certain opportunism, adopted beer, a popular and profitable drink. This was to attract moneyless pilgrims, and also provide a healthy drink to the tenants of its abbeys, the monks. Indeed, it was not unusual that water, even coming from a source, became contaminated in various ways. Beer, needing the water to be boiled, constituted a drink which was easy to manufacture and rather healthy from a biological point of view.

Over the centuries, the quality of beer improved so much so that it brought fame to the convents which manufactured it. It is estimated that in the year 1000, there were approximately 500 monastic breweries.

Monastic beer is the fruit of a long transmission of father brewer to father brewer, and of continuous improvement, rigorously cited in the writings of the monks.

Saint Benedict himself wrote that monks must produce themselves all that they need to live, and evoked the moderate consumption of wine for the monks. However, not everyone could produce wine, because a number of monasteries were established in areas unfavorable to vineyards. Thus, wine remained a product mostly reserved for visitors of prestige, and the monks quickly understood they had to make a daily substitute: barley beer, which was easier to produce. Beer requires mainly only water and cereals, which can be found under all latitudes. In addition, the cereals can be stored and the beer can thus be manufactured, upon request, almost in any season.

Thus, the detailed plan of the abbey of St. Gall in Switzerland, from the ninth century, indicates the presence of three breweries inside this convent and brings a lot of technical information on the brewery installations. Three beers were brewed in this abbey: the “PRIMA melior” reserved for the hosts of mark, the “cervisia” reserved for the brothers, and the “tertia”, consumed by pilgrims.

One also credits the monks with discovering the use of hops in beer, and also of the production of the first beers of low fermentation, according to documents of the fifteenth century discovered in a Bavarian convent of Munich. The hopped barley beer (cervesia lupulina) appears for the first time in a charter of the abbey of St-Denis during the year 768. It’s the Benedictines who introduced the manufacture of hopped beer in Lorraine (France). One then distinguished beer for the fathers (potio fortis), strong beer intended for the monks, and a weaker beer for the nuns.

It is through centuries of tradition, improvement, and innovation that one can consider that the monks had a major influence in the evolution of the trade of brewer.

comedores de batata

Van Gogh's Potato Eaters. chá ou café?

"And when I tell you that just now I am quite absorbed again in two new large studies of weavers’ interiors, you will understand that I am in no mood for it. Especially as it might cause new disagreements if I applied again to the gentlemen in The Hague. As to these two pictures of weavers, one shows a part of the loom with the figure and a small window. The other one is an interior, with three small windows, looking out on the yellowish greenery, contrasting with the blue of the cloth that is being woven on the loom and with the blouse of the weaver, which is again of another blue. But I have not yet started what struck me most in nature recently, for want of a good model. The half-ripe cornfields are at present of a dark golden tone, ruddy or gold bronze. This is raised to a maximum of effect by the contrast with the broken cobalt tone of the sky. Imagine in such a background women’s figures, very rough, very energetic, with sun-bronzed faces and arms and feet, with dusty, coarse indigo clothes and a black bonnet in the form of a barret on their short-cut hair"(...) tantas cartas para ler.
