I
Ahora escribo pájaros.
No los veo venir, no los elijo,
de golpe están ahí, son esto,
una bandada de palabras
posándose
una
a
una
en los alambres de la página,
chirriando, picoteando, lluvia de alas
y yo sin pan que darles, solamente
dejándolos venir. Tal vez
sea eso un árbol
o tal vez
el amor.

falar do mesmo não chega
"If the word, spoken or withheld, is a central and potent fact of theatre, so, too, is space and the occupation of that space by the body. Nor is it simply a matter of proxemics, of the meaning generated by gesture or appearance; it is that the word is made flesh. The theatre is by its nature sensuous. Even didactic drama alchemises its arguments through the mind made body. The severity of words on the page is corrupted by the mouth which articulates them. The minimalism of the printed word gives way to plenitude. That seduction, implicit in the text, becomes explicit in production. It cannot be extirpated. "

"You know, I was sitting in the University of Texas where they have the original manuscript of Watt by Mr Beckett and it was amazing because there were all these drawings on them, so I sat there one afternoon and copied them!"
It's almost as if Sam Shepard has spent his life circling around Samuel Beckett. It was discovering his plays as a young man that first inspired him to write, and Patti Smith says that in those days he never went anywhere without a copy of one or other of his plays on him.

"His characters live discontinuous lives. Some connection has been broken between themselves and the past (mythic and historical), between themselves and their families, their lovers, even the language they speak. experience comes in fragments. Emotions flare up and quixotically turn into their opposites. America itself seems deracinated. Myths have devolved into fantasies. Communities have become no more than the serendipitous gatherings of strangers. Landmarks are sand-blasted away or suffocated in the detritus of a society in which nothing seems worth retaining, and beauty is seen less in the natural sweep of the land than in the tail-fin of a '57 Chevy or the functionalism of a weapon. His is a world of distant echoes, of narratives that have lost their point, individuals who have simplified their lives out of anxiety or passion. These are so many Gatsbys viewing life through a single window, blinded by the brightness of an obsession, reinventing themselves so that the very idea of identity becomes suspect."
no The Cambridge Companion to Sam Shepard.

"Conversation is definitely not dialogue"
"The stuff that had the biggest influence on me was European drama in the sixties. That period brought theater into completely new territory—Beckett especially, who made American theater look like it was on crutches. I don’t think Beckett gets enough credit for revolutionizing theater, for turning it upside down. ", Shepard para a Paris Review em 97.
