"Every year I take on a personal challenge to learn something new. I've visited every US state, run 365 miles, built an AI for my home, read 25 books, and learned Mandarin.

I started doing these challenges in 2009. That first year the economy was in a deep recession and Facebook was not yet profitable. We needed to get serious about making sure Facebook had a sustainable business model. It was a serious year, and I wore a tie every day as a reminder.

Today feels a lot like that first year. The world feels anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do -- whether it's protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.

My personal challenge for 2018 is to focus on fixing these important issues. We won't prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we currently make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools. If we're successful this year then we'll end 2018 on a much better trajectory.

This may not seem like a personal challenge on its face, but I think I'll learn more by focusing intensely on these issues than I would by doing something completely separate. These issues touch on questions of history, civics, political philosophy, media, government, and of course technology. I'm looking forward to bringing groups of experts together to discuss and help work through these topics.

For example, one of the most interesting questions in technology right now is about centralization vs decentralization. A lot of us got into technology because we believe it can be a decentralizing force that puts more power in people's hands. (The first four words of Facebook's mission have always been "give people the power".) Back in the 1990s and 2000s, most people believed technology would be a decentralizing force.

But today, many people have lost faith in that promise. With the rise of a small number of big tech companies — and governments using technology to watch their citizens — many people now believe technology only centralizes power rather than decentralizes it.

There are important counter-trends to this --like encryption and cryptocurrency -- that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people's hands. But they come with the risk of being harder to control. I'm interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.

This will be a serious year of self-improvement and I'm looking forward to learning from working to fix our issues together."

my American blog traffic is steeply decreasing, I'm sure on account of google's proximity limitations where you "find" like humans with like tastes but remain blind to the rest of the geographic world, but also, I suspect, because of my mixed languages mumbo jumbo together with more images and a lot less text. I wonder if the number of American robots on my site will suffer any change if I start including text such as allahu akbar or allah is great or in the name of allah or similar vocabulary. or maybe the bots will be confused by the non-capitalized word. we'll see.

how moving from an old XP pc

is worse than moving home, or well, I'm not sure. at least by moving in real life there's a sense of a new beginning while dragging your old apps from an old to a new pc is nothing but a nuisance.
time to recover the Norwegian way (some would call it the Japanese way, but I prefer the former: more relaxed, more down to earth,  freer). time to start a new widget too, if blogger ever cancels this website my life will be in shambles never tor recover again. (to read here).

so, how to put subtitles into youtube vids without being banned from youtube for infringing copyright rules and such. after experimenting with a load of video converters, video editing programs and subtitles programs, after uploading films on youtube and adding the substitles right there, I seem to have come up with the easiest way, provided that there is a subtitles file somewhere out there for you to download that is. so: first find the film on youtube. then search for subtitles file and download it. then open the youtube film on subtitle-horse.com. then upload your subtitles. there you go. you can watch right there. to keep the vid, I stil don't know what to do, but I don't want to keep vids, I just want to watch them. problem solved for now.

the algorythm is anti socialist

(why learn a foreign language while keeping a strong boot on the English language soil) some time ago I was looking into Turkish carpets, their history, the patterns, the materials, the colors, the makers, the different styles from different parts of the country, the symbolism in their designs and so on (ever since I saw the tree of life on a silk carpet I was quite fascinated with carpet symbolism). my google returned little more than websites for tourists looking into buying an exotic expensive carpet to adorn their whealthy houses. my friend was nice enough to send me a link with his search for carpets on google and that is when I finally saw what I was searching for.
is  this censorship? I think it is. customization becomes censorship when you are only allowed to see what the machine 'thinks' you can see. there's no outside the box and much less equality of opportunity. let's say: how can an uneducated person ever see something that actually pushes him forward? this person's google with be filled with the person's expectations, which are low. the same for facebook or any customized internet resource (the cookie is your enemy) and the same for tv: in their anxiety with share and giving the audience what they 'think' the audience wants, the average person is subject to a mass wave of stupidity and stupefying programs on so called prime schedules,
how can one think outside the box? no other way but turning off the boxes of algorithms in your life and be in silence. how can one see the other?  well, learning a foreign language is one option. literature, another. to see with someone else's eyes, the greatest challenge.
