"It is furthermore intriguing to consider that before the introduction of the magnetic compass from China, the Scandinavian term 'hafvilla' (loss of one's course at sea) appears describing Vicking voyages plagued by fog or poor weather. But, within a few years of the introduction of the compass the word disappears. With the compass there was no need for a word describing the perplexing and confused sensation of being lost although the compass is, in its essence, a device used much like the raven, drawing invisible lines to follow and not strictly meant to define where one is but rather in which direction one should go. The only reason for 'hafvilla' to disappear was because the compass was thought to be certain. Distance was and is, however, in a compass, in no way indicated. One can be 10.000 miles or 100 miles away from the Magnetic North Pole and the needle will read the same. The North Magnetic Pole moves slowly over time due to changes in the Earth's core. In 2001, it was determined to lie near Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada at 81.3ºN 110.8ºW. In 2005, however, it was estimated to be at 82.7ºN 114.4ºW and in 2009, it was moving toward Russia at between 55-50 km per year."

não sei quais as consequências físicas e geográficas, mas consigo espreitar as consequências metafóricas de se estar sempre em local incerto, da apropriação do tempo e do espaço pela autoridade de detenção do tempo e do espaço (o que diz Meriç, afinal), da necessidade da ciência, ou seja, da necessidade de marcar, divdir, estabelecer, dissecar, catalogar, limitar, indicar. sempre pensámos que sabíamos onde estávamos.

as consequências de colocar a fé e a credibilidade em poucas instituições globais pode atrair curiosos e amigos da conspiração. mas há que ver que o suposto líder do mundo defende ideias como esta:

enquanto leio e releio o livro de Meriç Algün Ringborg que comprei na Robinson Crusoe, acabo por tropeçar na notícia de que aquela livraria (onde ficámos e ficámos, com Dylan no ar) está em dificuldade e em perigo de fechar portas. encontra-se na importante rua Istiklal onde as rendas se têm tornado difíceis de comportar. nesta mesma rua há uma série de outras livrarias, algumas mais comerciais, outras menos, algumas bastante boas. a Robinson Crusoe é uma das livrarias especiais onde se fica mais tempo e onde quem lá está sabe o que está a vender e tem convicções, sejam elas quais forem. lembro-me de raspão da livraria Sá da Costa no Chiado.

para salvar a Robinson Crusoe, os livreiros optaram por pedir um empréstimo aos clientes: uma maneira de dizer. lançaram o cartão Robkart para pagar agora e comprar depois, um cartão-oferta a nós próprios. que bela ideia.

"We can of course ask ourselves why anybody would want to follow us and we might even be blessed without the peculiar sensation of being watched, that eerie feeling that makes us look behind our backs, but to be watched and followed is today ubiquitous. Cameras in subways, streets and parks as well as travel cards that archive journeys, credit card data, cell phone records and a multitude of other mechanisms are currently employed to keep us simultaneously safe and observed - although the two need not necessarily be associated.

There are very few instances where one has the opportunity to follow another human being in enough detail so as to come close to understanding him/her completely, tracking his/her entire life and truly delve into his/her existence especially if one's objective is uncovering truths, whether through his behaviour, possessions or other, and particularly within the realm of recording and documenting. Randomly following someone for only a brief period of time would render notions of voyeurism, the excitement of the chase and perhaps the duality between watching and to be watched. Following for a lengthier period would perhaps constitute espionage, the attempt to extract information to be used. Voyeurism and espionage are differentiated by intent, so much is clear. But both modes of looking create the same friction.

"Harry Caul, the protagonist in Francis Ford Coppola's film The Conversation is an audio surveillance expert. He is an invader of privacy, the best in the business who - according to the film's poster - can record any conversation between two people, anywhere. os diários de bordo duplos de Crowhurst parecem-me uma boa metáfora para o nosso tempo: o discurso oficial, os media e a publicidade numa rota, a realidade noutra.

"In 1968, Crowhurst enrolled in a sailing race around the world where one was supposed to circumnavigate the globe alone - something that at the time had never been done. Early on in the race however, Crowhurst faced difficulties with a subpar vessel that was literally falling apart and lacking in experience, having never attempted anything similar, he was undoubtedly in trouble. Would he return home he would face humiliation and bankrupcy, would he continue he would without a doubt die. Those were his options. But, Crowhurst found a third alternative and began reporting fictitious bearings, letting the world know that he was heading for Cape Horn whilst he was in fact drifting in the Atlantic. At this time, when Crowhurst begins what can only be said to be two journeys - one real and one fake - he begins keeping two logbooks, one for each of the journeys. The fake, which the rest of the world believes at the time to be true, is one of a hero that has amongst other things broken the record in miles sailed in a day. The other, however, shows his slowly degenerating mental state in which ultimately becomes clear that he believed himself to be a cosmic being and a final passage saying, «there is no good or evil, only truth.» Before Crowhurst set sail, however he was a seller of navigational instruments and therefore presumably possessed a specialised knowledge of finding his way. His boat was in addition equipped with the most recent technological inventions.
Yet, he got lost, but rather than admit defeat he continued to report manipulated coordinates as if he was still in the race and laid in wait to re-join it when the other sailors had almost completed their circumnavigation. Crowhurst's boat was found after 9 months at sea, without him in it, and it became in time apparent that he had falsified his route. Crowhurst used all the devices we know, photographs, tape and video recordings, written accounts of longitudes and stories as well as radio transmissions to make fiction - a script of his fake travels, whilst, all along, he never left the Atlantic."

um autor dá um texto seu a uma muito jovem artista para publicação num livro que reúne fragmentos em torno do tema desaparecimento, apenas 500 exemplares publicados. este tema é estrutural em Pamuk e posso colocar o scarf da mulher do miniaturista e o scarf de Sibel no Museu da Inocência nessa colecção de fragmentos. uma obra cuja motivação é a melancolia do desaparecimento e a vida dos vestígios, os objectos. posso bem identificar-me com isto, eu e as minhas ruas desertas.

DA: Why have you embraced the line in your work?

MAR: I find the line, by which I mean any line, quite enigmatic. It can be an image portraying something or representing information, whilst still being a line. The length of the line can be infinite, and it can almost be any width. The line also divides and separates—either horizontally or vertically—and, as each side of the line becomes contextualized, it takes on the role of a kind of void space. In the case of Line No.1 (Holy Bible), the line employs a particular aspect, which is due to its nature: it has the distinct psychological effect of coercing whomever is in the room to hold their body at its level, or below it. Wall-based borders such as these are frequently used in interrogation rooms and classrooms. To make people docile, an unassuming line is simply painted on a wall or manifested in another way. I wanted to couple the Bible, as an authoritative text, with such a gesture to explore what effects it might have along with the surrounding geographical territories of the islands Crusoe and Selkirk have lived on.

DA: Do you have any instructions for how the piece should be read?

MAR: Not really.

que comprei na Robinson Crusoe, um livro de exposição sobre o desaparecimento. o tempo, o espaço, a exposição e o apagamento. interessante no mesmo contexto de re-organização urbana como eliminação de minorias e de censura. todas as obras em Istanbul não são apenas o que são mas trazem sempre as camadas habituais em países sujeitos a censura e opressão. vale a pena seguir o trabalho de Meriç Algün Ringborg.
