Brokeback and parallel lives

I watched Brokeback Mountain much after all the fuss when there is actually space to see and have a clear mind about it. The most impressive feature for me is of course Wyoming, that paradise on earth, the mountains, a place to die. I liked the guys, the performing was convincing, realistic and contained as it should have been. Those guys made their characters real, flesh and bone, the magic worked.

So much has been said about homosexuality, so many jokes on the evening talk shows, unending press and reviews. Funny enough I didn't make much of the fact that the two main characters were men. I found the fact that the film portrays a hidden life much more interesting. It reminds me of some French films that analyse the characters inside out and show how rich and sophisticated humans really are. Who knows you for real? Your spouse, your co-workers, friends, family? The whole of a human being is in my mind unattainable and untranslatable, just like the quote I keep on the header, by Perec. We are the onion being, peel after peel, until nothingness, a web of intricated relations, feelings, purposes and pain. It is the acknowledgement of that web that I really liked about Brokeback Mountain.
