APTO - The modern housing of Brasília
On the February 2nd, 1960, the “superquadra 108 South” was inaugurated in Brasilia. This residential complex, made by 11 buildings and its 456 apartments, was the first block to be completely done in the new Brazilian capital.
Fifty years later, I began this project aiming to document the interior of these homes, the way their actual residents occupy this spaces, built under the precepts of the modernist architecture.
This first block of buildings and its urbanism were drawn by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, and it was taken as a reference for the planning of the whole city.
This book includes, apart from my own photographs, old black-and-white pictures found in the public archives and made during the years of its construction, interviews with the actual residents and reproductions of the original architectural plans."
