Another great companion for lovers in despair is Tacitus' Nero and the burning of Rome (Penguin 60s Classics edition, ISBN 0-14-600146-X, a very hard to find book unfortunately, but there are many other editions of Tacitus) . It is nothing like Hannibal Crossing the Alps, it lacks the passion and the insider view, but it stuns by the cold, crisp descriptions of Nero's actions, making them seem expected and even acceptable. A cool breeze to cool down the hots of love's disappointments.
