On this day in 1521 Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan died after being hit by a poisoned arrow during a tribal skirmish on Mactan Island in the Philippines. He was the first European to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean; and the first to cross the Pacific, in 1521.
